Originally sponsored by the Save the Manatee Club,
responsibility for the iconic license plate was transferred
to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission
on March 6, 1990. Seventeen years later when a new plate
was created, over 559,000 plates had been issued.
Revenue from the plate sales is deposited into the
Save the Manatee Trust Fund
