USGS Scientist David Wahl wanted sediment core
samples
from Palmyra lagoon, so he and Stanford undergrads
built a drill-ship out of 2x4's, plywood and blocks
of styrofoam
insulation from the atoll's former icehouse factory.
Key to this underwater image was waiting for the
bubbles from my snorkel
to clear so that the water was mirror-smooth.
Then applying everything my mentor Fred Bavendam
taught me about using fill-flash to illuminate my subject!
